Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fort Miller is among one of the most disadvantaged middle school's in the Fresno Unified School District with 63% of its students labeled as at risk. From this percentage, many of our students are in foster care, considered homeless, and face extreme poverty. Fort Miller has one of the worst reputations in the district and requires the most need for teachers who have a shared vision to improve not only the lives of students but the community around them. In order to do this, it is imperative that we focus on educating our students in a positive environment, free from distraction.
My Project
At Fort Miller, teachers are supplied with a $300 spending limit to office depot, a teacher's desk, filing cabinet, and desks for the students. If teachers are interested in modernizing their classroom they must purchase all items and furniture with their own money, or poach furniture from teachers who are leaving the site.
After teaching at Fort Miller this past year, I have fallen in love with the potential and grit our students have to change the world around them.
Our students may be rough around the edges, but they have much more experience with life-changing events, that humble their experience and gives them a purpose to fight for justice, and kindness in a world that has placed them in a position where they are considered less than their peers.
As a social studies instructor, it is my duty to teach my students how to be productive citizens in our community, but without a proper learning environment, it is difficult to do so. Because of this, I am kindly asking for funds to help purchase new desks for my students. The desks in my classroom have not been replaced for over 10 years and are now covered in engraved swastikas, profanity, and inappropriate images of male genitals. I teach my students to be ready to learn upon entering the classroom, but with this type of distraction, students are focused on the immaturity and actions of students from many years ago who damaged classroom property.
