The heavy-duty shelving unit and utility cart now hold all of our gardening supplies in one central place, which makes it so much easier for students to access materials during class. The solar-powered drip irrigation system has been especially exciting for my students—they were fascinated to see how we could harness the sun to keep our plants watered, even when we're not on campus. The new hardware cloth, they even helped build protective fencing around our seedlings to keep them safe from curious critters and students will have the chance to hand build these structures. These hands-on tasks turned into a real-life STEM lesson that connected science, math, and teamwork.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their reactions were immediate—eyes wide, lots of \"wows.\" They immediately started brainstorming how we could put each item to use. The pruners became part of our plant care toolkit right away, and the shelving and carts gave them a sense of pride in keeping our shared space neat and professional. It made them feel like \"real gardeners,\" not just students experimenting with plants.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next step is to continue expanding our school garden so that it can provide both fresh food and rich learning opportunities. The irrigation system will allow us to maintain healthy plants even as the weather gets hotter, and the organized storage setup means we'll be able to rotate in new projects with ease. My students are already planning a fall planting of cool-weather vegetables, and thanks to your support, they'll have the tools they need to see their efforts grow from seed to harvest.","fullyFundedDate":1745350693667,"projectUrl":"project/materials-needed-in-sustainable-gardenin/9257301/","projectTitle":"Materials Needed in Sustainable Gardening for Our Middle School Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Munn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7260095_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1591221133183","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7260095"},{"teacherId":6609715,"projectId":9246492,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating these books to our classroom. Your support has made a meaningful impact—not just by putting books into students' hands, but by helping to shape the way they think, speak, and act toward one another.\r\n\r\nThis book isn't just about kindness as a vague ideal—it's about actionable empathy, the kind that requires courage, vulnerability, and intentionality. Through reading Deep Kindness, my students are learning to reflect on their own behaviors, recognize the deeper needs of those around them, and practice kindness as a skill rather than a spontaneous act.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is both thoughtful and interactive. We annotate, journal, and engage in deep discussions. With Deep Kindness, these conversations have been more personal and more powerful than ever before. Students are connecting the book's lessons to their lives—some are writing letters of appreciation to people who've helped them, others are opening up about challenges they face in being kind to themselves.\r\n\r\nOne student who had previously been disengaged with class readings has completely lit up with this book. They've said things like, \"This book actually gets me,\" and have taken initiative to lead small group discussions. That kind of transformation is exactly why I became a teacher—and exactly why your donation matters so much.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, this project has done more than put books on desks. The students and fellow staff members were very excited to see all of the garden materials being delivered. Students have been helping me to set up the metal raised beds. \r\n\r\nOne snag is that we currently do not have a dedicated water source. Our school garden is far from a hose and currently water needs to be carried in a pitcher to the garden. So additional beds have not yet been built. We are working with the operations to get something going for the grounds department to build a water source for us. Once that is active, we will be able to build the rest of the garden beds and run all of the irrigation lines!\r\n\r\nAnother bureaucratic issue is that I cannot hire a private plumber or landscaper to build the water line for us. It has to go through a district department and they are not available to do it until July 2025, which is months away. While this is disappointing, we are trying to stay positive and keep reminding them of how important this school garden is to the students!","fullyFundedDate":1731940412412,"projectUrl":"project/farm-to-school-a-school-garden-for-gro/8885923/","projectTitle":"Farm to School - A School Garden for Growing Minds!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Munn","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7260095_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1591221133183","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7260095"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_77471","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":604,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":71,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.3,"schoolId":77471,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fort Miller Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Fort Miller Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/fresno-unified-school-district/ft-miller-middle-school/77471"}
