Our Classroom is Booked!

Help me give my students books that expand their minds and help bridge reading level gaps from the pandemic.

Mrs. Ott Dixie Middle School
Saint George, UT Grades 6-8

My Students

My students are hardworking and resilient. They often are faced with extreme hardship in their home lives, but they still come to school and try their best. They often don't have the resources to have books to read at home or to do their homework at home but they do what they can.

Throughout the pandemic, my students have continued to surprise me with their grit.

They adapt to the situations quickly and are flexible in their schooling. They have such a desire to be in-person in school after being at home for so long. They deserve the resources that they need to further their education despite family struggles.

My Project

These books will be used to increase student engagement by them receiving more choice in the classroom with the classroom novels. These books were specifically chosen with multicultural ideas in mind to expand the limited experiences of these kids and see the world from a new light. So many of my students don't have access to books at home. I would love to provide them with book choices to become a lover of reading, and then with the books themselves so they can read in school and at home.

Research shows that reading only 20 minutes a day puts you ahead of 90% of other students.

I want to give my students (especially those that struggle and don't have much) to achieve high levels of learning even though they don't have the resources at home.

Because of the pandemic, reading levels are at an all-time low. The students need to practice and they need a way that they can have access to reading materials even when they have to quarantine or have to work on schoolwork at home. This will provide them with the opportunity.
