My Kindergarteners are absolutely delightful. They love the silliest things and get so excited to learn.
The basic math skills we learn in Kindergarten may seem simple, but they are absolutely essential and help each child build a solid foundation for future grades.
Nothing sticks with a child better than hands-on, repeated practice. The math manipulatives I am asking for in this project include things like counters, dominoes, connecting cubes, counting trays, ten frames, and more. We will use them to practice hands-on activities that allow students to visualize and conceptualize what they are learning in an interactive way. We will be able to practice a variety of different skills-- counting, patterns, addition/subtraction, sorting, composing/decomposing, number recognition, etc. I have partner games, small group activities, and independent work to go along with all of the math tools I am asking for, so students will be able to use them in a variety of different ways.
All of these skills will help contribute to their abilities in math as they go through elementary school. My goal as a teacher is to help kids learn to love math and to feel successful when doing it, and these tools will help with all of that.
