This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I've spent my career directing bands in Houston public schools, Sharpstown, then Elsik in Alief, and now Waltrip. Three programs, three communities, and the same thing every time: students who show up ready to work with equipment that should have been replaced years ago.

For the first time in five years, we have a full-time percussionist on staff.

Our new assistant director came up through Alief schools and knows exactly what these students are working with. That means our percussion section finally gets the daily instruction it's needed all along. Together we're strengthening this program, and this equipment is where it starts.

This year we have 31 percussionists, including ten incoming freshmen, our largest percussion class in years. We don't have the equipment to match. Our marching drumheads are worn well past the point where students can hear their own sound clearly. Our observation tower dates to the 1980s and isn't tall enough to see a full drill form, so students can't see the spacing and alignment they're evaluated on.

Practice pads so every percussionist plays every day. Fresh heads and proper mallets. A canopy for Houston heat and a sound system that reaches across the field for our 140+ member marching band. And a drone, so students can finally watch their own drill from above and fix what they see.

These students show up. They deserve equipment that shows up too.
