This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a Kindergarten teacher to 23 wonderful students. These students attend a Title I school in Central Pennsylvania where there is 100 percent free lunch. Having ownership of their own items is a rarity for most. Providing students with the opportunity to have their own items will teach them responsibility and respect of the items provided to them, along with them having all supplies at their finger tips so they are ready to learn.
Having these supplies would relieve the urge to collect all supplies at their table with the fear they will not have the opportunity to use them.
My Project
Currently worksheets have been removed from workbooks to be handed out since we do not have desks. Transition times at this time are long as we are constantly collecting and distributing supplies for each topic being taught.
Providing students with chair pockets will give my students the ownership of their workbooks and other supplies such as pencils, crayons, and markers, needed to be successful in the classroom.
The goal is for students to understand responsibility of being ready for each topic being taught in addition to learning how to take care of their supplies. Students having their own supplies will provide confidence to be successful with each use.
