Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The 750 students participate in a gardening project growing vegetables, wildflowers, and cultivating Mason Bees. From these activities, they learn how to care and protect the environment. The garden is used for a variety of functions, and students take pride in maintaining this area of the school.
Learning how to take care of the environment, and all it has to offer, is of extreme importance in today's society.
Being able to create and grow a garden of vegetables and/or wildflowers is enriching and valuable, as well as, learning the importance of pollination and the Mason Bees. Having a Mason Bee habitat will help the students learn in a hands on way how they can help the pollination process and see it in action.
The 'manual' labor of digging, toiling, weeding, and planting helps the students become more interactive and take better care of the land. The students also enjoy being able to eat what they sow as the food ripens.
My Project
Each Friday, the students rotate through the gardening program established by volunteers and retired teachers, all of whom are considered 'Master Gardeners'. the volunteers walk the students through a step by step process about gardening and helping the environment.
Working in small groups, the students are taught the gardening process: weeding, toiling the soil, fertilizing, and caring for the land and plants, and the importance and benefits of composting and caring for the environment.
By obtaining these materials, the students will also be able to include and participate in the composting segment. They will learn about recycling the land, and why it is important. By learning in an outdoor, hands-on environment, the students will be able to 'reap' what they sow, and share their knowledge with others.
