We immediately incorporated them into collaborative assignments, such as group and partner work. I always offer students the choice to work at their desks with a partner or find a comfortable spot in the classroom. Before the introduction of the cushions, half of the students preferred working at their desks; now, most of the class choose to work in various spots around the room. Some students even tried to keep them on their chairs afterwards!\r\n\r\nIn addition to classroom collaboration, the students had the opportunity to use the cushions outside during the Great Shake Out, an earthquake preparedness drill. Typically, students sit on the concrete for an extended period, but this year, they enjoyed the comfort of the cushions and were excited to take them outside.\r\n\r\nThe cushions have held up well over the past few months, despite daily use by some students. The story of Wilbur the pig and his friend Charlotte the spider taught us about friendship and kindness. My students loved how the characters worked together to solve problems, and it showed them the importance of helping each other. Every day, they were excited to see what would happen next in the story.\r\n\r\nThe book also helped the students improve their reading skills. We practiced reading aloud, and everyone got better at understanding the story. The fun and exciting adventures in the book made learning enjoyable. In first grade, it is so important to give students the opportunity to read a variety of books by different authors to get them engaged and excited to read. Reading is such an important part of learning and having these books in the classroom give them that special time to love reading.\r\n\r\nWe do \"Book Club\" everyday in class. We come in after lunch, get in a circle on the rug, and read the chapter books together. We use a discussion ball that motivates students to participate in the discussion. After we read the chapter, we analyze the text using the Depth and Complexity prompts that are geared toward our gifted learners. We also discuss the characters, settings, plots, and the students make connections to their own prior knowledge. The students look forward to reading every day and enjoy the relaxed setting of enjoying the book. \r\n\r\nWhat makes me so proud, is that many students have told me that they enjoyed certain books so much that they have purchased or gone to the public library to get other books written by the same author!
