My students need Orff materials to add to our current set of instruments including a Bass bar to fill out our low end, chromatic add on for our soprano xylophone and fresh mallets for our Altos.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." – President Barack Obama.
I am the music teacher at a school in South Seattle.
We are a Title I school, as well as a Superintendent's Intervention school. We currently provide free or reduced lunch for 100% of our students. We are a diverse school, with many students speaking a second language at home and receiving ELL services. In addition, we have a large number of students receiving intervention and SPED services. Many of our students are Somali refugees.
In my classroom, I seek to open creative spaces in which students may use skills to develop and imagine possibilities. My program includes K-5 General music, Choir, and Musical. I use a variety of Orff and small percussion instruments, as well as two and three-part singing to build student skill.
My Project
These materials will enhance and improve the my student’s learning and creating. These additions to our current Orff set will improve student engagement. New mallets are needed for our current set of Alto xylophones. A Low Contra Bass D bar will help to fill out the low end of many arrangements throughout our repertoire. It will be used k-5. The chromatic add on will be used by students, widening their repertoire possibilities. It will allow students to play more complex melodies. It will be put to use right away by fifth grade students who will need it to complete our arrangement of You are the Sunshine of my Life.
