My students need a variety of 18 book titles on Oregon History to access the rich history of the state they live in including book titles such as "Children of the Trail West" and "The Back of Beyond: A Story about Lewis and Clark".
I teach 4th grade in a high poverty and highly culturally diverse community in Oregon.
Currently, the state standards require that in 4th grade we teach Oregon History. The textbooks in my room are over 30 years old. The obstacle is that the texts do not engage students.
I have requested various books on Oregon History that will reach children at their levels of learning. The books are highly engaging and will be able to help students to learn about their state history. Students will be able to use the books for research individually or in a group. A lot of the books I have chosen also have very colorful pictures that will be highly engaging and helpful to the students who speak English as a Second Language.
Your help will provide current literature to a group of students who often do not have access to literature in their home or updated literature in the classroom. I also believe that students who buy into the history of the state will have an opportunity to think further about how they can become a bigger part of our community, locally as well as worldwide.
