This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Music lifts the spirit. But research also shows that learning an instrument makes the brain function more efficiently. Without enough orchestra books for every child, success is more difficult to achieve.

Our orchestra students come from backgrounds that barely provide the basics of life.

The opportunity to learn an instrument is not within their families' financial means. Our school district has instruments to lend them at no cost, but does not provide the books. The students have been learning enthusiastically nevertheless. We use old hand-me-down books (though we don't have enough of them) and photocopies of music that is in the public domain.

My Project

One of the thrilling things about orchestra is watching how it can change a child's self-perception. I have seen special ed students as well as average students, who start the year unsure of themselves with their peers, discover their special music ability and blossom into more confident individuals. I am impressed by the way they practice their lessons and come prepared. They know orchestra is a privilege and honor the opportunity with commitment to learning. Our concert at the end of the year is met with an enthusiastic audience of parents, teachers and friends. These capable young people deserve to learn from books that are nice to look at and are well-planned by the authors.

The delight in the young musicians eyes when they receive a new book from which to learn, their enthusiasm as they work through the songs, their pride in their accomplishments, are all priceless.

Perhaps they will continue on to the orchestras in middle school and high school and beyond. The sense of community a young person gets, is one reason that students in orchestra almost always graduate high school, a milestone that I would like to see all these precious children achieve.
