Our orchestra students come from backgrounds that barely provide the basics of life. The opportunity to learn an instrument is not within their families' financial means. Our school district has instruments to lend them at no cost, but does not provide the books. The students have been learning enthusiastically nevertheless. We use old hand-me-down books (though we don't have enough of them) and photocopies of music that is in the public domain.
