Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What do you mean by that Ms. V?", or, "Ahhh, I think I know what you are talking about...wait, nevermind." Those two phrases are all too common in my Science classroom which is made up by urban students who have not had the opportunity to "explore" the vast and amazing world around them.

My students come to class everyday with gleaming eyes and smiles from ear to ear, "What are we going to learn today Ms. V?", "Oh, we have an amazing lab today", I respond.

"That's why we love your class, it is always fun and we learn so much!". They thrive on exploring and making sense of "their world". Unfortunately, most of my students have not had the opportunity to travel outside of their neighborhood, much less of their city. Their exposure is very limited. Therefore, I am their passport to discovery. I feel it is my responsibility to provide them with as many hands-on learning opportunities as possible that they otherwise would not have. We are a Title I school with limited funding, so the opportunities they do have in my class are also limited, as our budget does not allow me to provide them with some of the basic resources that would make their learning experience that much more powerful.

My Project

My project, Operation Transformation, will allow students to explore the different forms of energy and their transformation into other forms of energy. Most students think that energy dies or magically disappears. With this lab, they will be given the opportunity to explore the different channels of energy transformation and they will be able to make sense of what happens to each form of energy when we are no longer able to see it in action or hear it. Students will also be able to see how it is that solar energy is transformed into electrical energy. This is a topic that is so difficult to teach and the best way for students to learn it is through actual hands-on activities which they can manipulate.

Research shows that students learn best through inquiry.

If funded, this lab will allow my students to inquire about the difficult subject that is transformation of energy. The transformation of solar energy in particular, will allow students to explore first hand and understand the reason for our need to find alternative energy in renewable resources. This lab will spark up more powerful conversations, which will lead to questions, which lead to additional inquiry and bring out awareness.
