Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom serves students with autism on a Title I campus, where many of our families face economic challenges. For many of my students, school is where they experience new opportunities for the very first time, including access to technology. Every day, I strive to create a structured, supportive classroom where students develop the literacy, communication, and life skills they need to become confident, independent learners. Literacy is at the heart of everything we do. My students are learning to recognize letters and sounds, build vocabulary, develop comprehension, communicate their ideas, and discover the joy of reading. Because every student learns differently, they need instruction that is individualized, engaging, and accessible.

An iPad and Apple Pencil would allow me to provide literacy instruction that meets each student's unique needs.

With the iPad, I can use interactive reading programs, digital books with read-aloud features, phonics and vocabulary apps, visual supports, and communication tools that make literacy meaningful for students at all learning levels. Many of my students benefit from seeing, hearing, and interacting with text in multiple ways, and technology provides opportunities that traditional materials cannot always offer. The iPad is the ideal choice because its bright, responsive display allows students to clearly see text, pictures, and interactive learning activities while giving me the flexibility to create customized literacy lessons aligned to each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

A successful literacy classroom also depends on an environment where students can focus. Many students with autism experience sensory sensitivities, and harsh fluorescent lighting can become a barrier to learning. Light shades will soften the classroom lighting, helping reduce sensory overload and creating a calm atmosphere where students can better attend to stories, reading instruction, small-group lessons, and communication activities.
