My Project

Walking Into a World of Stories

My gifted 5th and 6th grade students are curious, thoughtful learners who thrive when they are challenged to look beyond the surface of a text.

I am seeking 25 copies of A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park to add an engaging, meaningful novel to our English Language Arts curriculum.

This novel will complement our College of William & Mary gifted curriculum and provide students with an opportunity to explore the concept of change through both literature and nonfiction narrative. As students read, they will examine how individuals and communities respond to change, identify patterns across the text, and consider how experiences can shape a person's choices, beliefs, and future.

Having a class set of 25 books will allow every student to actively participate in our shared reading experience. Students will annotate, discuss, question, analyze, and make connections between the novel and nonfiction narratives. They will use evidence from the text to develop deeper understandings and engage in the higher-level thinking that is at the heart of gifted education.

Your support will put a powerful story into the hands of my students and give them an opportunity to explore resilience, perspective, change, and the connections between real-world experiences and literature.
