Help me give my students another laser printer and quiet Cloudline exhaust fan. Currently, we have only one laser etcher, and it becomes a traffic jam when 25 or 30 students finish their designs
Students here are inquisitive, enthusiastic, creative and trustworthy. Digital Arts and Media is our Career Technical Education Program of Study, and we also offer an International Baccalaureate Career Program option. Students learn the Adobe Applications in a Digital Media Design class, and work on a variety of design projects, often utilizing the vinyl cutter and our Glowforge laser etcher. Students who are interested can take the courses dedicated to Digital Sculpture and 3-D Print Design and STEAM Product Design and they also have a desktop milling machine, or C&C. Last year we offered a dual-language immersion Spanish-English Art and Tech course.
Few of our students have experience outside the world of Macs, Windows and video game consoles, although we have created a functioning arcade cabinet with a Raspberry Pi and custom vinyl graphics.
Students get really excited to learn new skills and create exciting projects, and a handful meet at lunch, where they design custom cell phone cases, guitar picks etc. Sometimes they get frustrated when our school doesn't have quality equipment, but they are grateful for the equipment I can provide, and they are respectful of my computer lab and the classroom.
My Project
We are requesting a laser etcher and exhaust fan. Our design classes have seen incredible success with our Glowforge laser etcher, but it can only cut a few projects at a time, and our class period usually ends before students can get their laser jobs. The laser tends to be noisy so a quiet exhaust fan helps the place to not sound like an airport.
We have been experimenting with little wooden finger joint boxes, with designs etched and cut into the walls.
Then we're lighting the boxes from inside, with laser etched acrylic to add to the flair. We also do mountain silhouettes, lit from behind using LED lights and little laser cut slabs of acrylic. The effect is really gorgeous. We are also laser etching photos into acrylic and wood. In addition, students are making jigsaw puzzles, keychains, and dice boxes. The only problem is that one Glowforge laser isn't enough for a full classroom of young designers. An additional laser would raise the interest level and make the projects take shape at twice the pace.
