Our school is the one of the lower-SES schools, in a sort of tri-city, with seven high schools in three districts. 49% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, with 40% on free lunch. It is the 70th largest high school in the state, with around 1000 to 1100 students: 17% Hispanic, 8% two or more ethnicities, 2% African American, 2% American Indian, 2% Asian, 1% Pacific Islander, and 69% Caucasian. Students are from the edge of downtown, and up into the suburbs, so there's a mix of cultures. From the edge of town, we have hard-working, blue-collar families, who might work at the mills, or the airport. Then downtown, we have kids coming in who don't even have a safe place to sleep, or do homework. Some are couch-surfing. But in electives, they always seem eager to see what's next, and what project is around the corner. Learning new skills really sells itself.
