I wanted to share what they've actually done in the classroom, since that's not always obvious from a title on a shelf.\r\n\r\nThese novels and novel sets are recently published, high-interest, and written mostly by women and authors of color — which matters more than it might seem. A lot of my students had never read a book where the main character looked like them, talked like them, or dealt with something they'd actually lived through. That changes how they read. They stop skimming for the test and start reading because they want to know what happens next. The graphic novels do the same work for students who've struggled with reading in the past — the visual format gets them into the story, and once they're hooked, they're willing to push through harder text too.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom looks like students actually talking about what they read — not just answering comprehension questions, but arguing about a character's choice, connecting a scene to something in their own life, recommending a book to a friend because they couldn't put it down. With the novel sets, we do book clubs: small groups reading the same title, meeting to discuss, holding each other accountable for finishing chapters. It's reading as something students do with each other, not something they do alone under a deadline.\r\n\r\nThat's the real shift these books made — reading stopped being a task and started being something a lot of my students actually chose to do. The self-help books gave them language for things like managing stress, setting goals, and working through conflict, skills that don't usually get taught directly but matter every day. The planners taught them to plan ahead instead of just reacting, a habit that stuck with a lot of them long after the class ended.\r\n\r\nI still hear from former students about that class. They talk about the goal-setting exercises, the leadership case studies, the habit of sitting down with a planner instead of trying to keep everything in their heads. So many of our students rely on apple macbooks for assignments, communication supports, and accessing their accommodations, and a dead battery used to mean lost instructional time. Now students can plug in right when they walk in the door and get straight to work without missing a beat—something families do every day at home, but in a classroom with a full caseload of students, having enough chargers on hand makes a noticeable difference.\r\n\r\nThe sensory items have honestly been one of the most exciting additions for my students. For kids who experience anxiety, sensory processing differences, or who just need a way to stay regulated during a long school day, having access to fidgets and sensory tools right at their desk has helped them stay focused and present for learning instead of spending energy trying to manage how they're feeling. I've noticed a few students in particular—ones who used to ask to step out of the room when things felt overwhelming—now reach for a sensory tool instead and are able to stay in class and keep working.\r\n\r\nThe pens and tissues might seem small, but they've removed everyday barriers that add up. Students aren't waiting around or feeling embarrassed asking to borrow supplies, and we're able to keep the classroom running smoothly and respectfully.\r\nAltogether, these supplies have helped create a classroom environment where my students feel prepared, comfortable, and ready to learn—which is exactly what they deserve.
