Help me give my students access to rich and relevant literature, individual journals, whiteboards and reusable items to participate in online learning.
My students come to school so excited to be "big kids", eager to start learning! They become writers, mathematicians, scientists and good friends. Their growth is not only limited to academic and physical benchmarks but also social and emotional development. There are days when the progress seems incremental and other days when it feels like the growth is monumental, and it is.
My students come from right down the street and across the planet!
I have children from Ethiopia, Burma, Cambodia, Russia, Korea, Sudan; some have never been to a formal school before walking into my classroom.
My students have curiosity and wonder in their eyes and I find myself inspired by their resilience, continued dedication and enthusiasm as they show up to school each day carrying unknown burdens. I teach at a school in the inner city where approximately 70% of our students benefit from free or reduced-price lunch. Many of the students in our school are not native English speakers and live in housing complexes for refugee families. The poverty and insecurity they face here, now, is not the worst of what they have experienced.
My Project
The items I am hoping to provide my students will allow them to do independent hands-on activities and participate actively in whole and small group activities online. I am asking for materials that students will be able to use multiple times and allow for them to have some hands-on activities to help encourage engagement. The ten grids, activity sheets, and small clock sets will all assist in students being able to engage at home both while online and also independently.
I am also asking for books that include strong messages about racial equality, family variations, gender differences, and a global sense of empathy.
The books I have chosen will help my students see themselves in literature and feel represented in stories.
