Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a very diverse community. Families in our district come from over one hundred countries and their children come to school with English as their second, third or even fourth language. These students arrive at school with a wide range of life experiences but often, with very limited experience in a structured, focused, shared learning community.
One size does not fit all, to fully engage in daily learning experiences young students need to have an environment that supports their individual needs.
All too often classrooms are furnished as if all children are the same size, have the same comfort zones, and the same learning styles.
My Project
Elementary school classrooms are often furnished as if all first grade students are the same size or have the same physical needs. This means some children's feet can't touch the floor because "K-2 chairs" are too tall, and other children's knees are squished by "K-2 tables" are too low. While I can search my building for alternative chairs, and I can adjust the height of some tables, the furniture in my room does not meet the physical needs of all my students.
Children who struggle to be comfortable because our furniture does not fit them, are often distracted from their work.
Something as simple as a sturdy foot rest, something that stays in place, provides a child with the healthy support their circulation needs at the same time it allows them to focus on work.
While the majority of students are comfortable at traditional tables, some students work better sitting on the floor. Providing these students with a sturdy lap table supports their individual learning needs, and demonstrates to the whole class, a respectful response to different working styles.
