The students in my class, and all the students in my school, live in an area of concentrated poverty. One hundred percent of the students are eligible for free meals, during the course of the school day this means breakfast, lunch and a snack. Our classroom demographics are impacted by the poverty of our families, students enroll and move away at a very high rate as families struggle with housing. Every time a new student joins our community, time and energy is drawn away from teaching to welcome that child and help them learn our routines and expectations. As our class size increases all students are impacted, this might mean fitting another chair in at a table, less one-on-one time with the teacher, or simply a longer line walking through the hall. A changing class group has an impact on the learning environment - and we often do not have the resources needed to meet the needs of these young children.
