Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom take the polar bear and climate change very seriously. We take personal responsibility for finding ways to conserve resources while enhancing our learning. One little change can make a big difference in the life of a polar bear and us. One little Elmo . . .

My first grade students attend a school that serves a low-income community in a Northern California.

We are a Title I school where the majority of the students are English Language learners and come from predominately Spanish speaking homes. They live in a small isolated community far from libraries or other educational resources within walking distance for our students. Despite the lack of access to outside areas, my students have been able to develop a love for wildlife and the environment around them. They have a particular affection for polar bears, especially after learning about the German Bear Knut. This story was a springboard for learning about how important the environment is for the survival of polar bears. My students are able to understand the connection of their everyday choices and how this impacts the world at large from the polar bear to the oceans and beyond. My school community is close to Chevron so we want to be part of the Chevron classroom challenge.

My Project

My English Language learners learn best with visual aids. An Elmo document projector will allow us to share our stories, pictures and projects in real time while helping the environment. Having the right tools to model and demonstrate specific skills to my class on a large scale will give them more opportunities for success. My students will be able to edit their work and get instant feedback from the whole class. My English Language learners will benefit from the many opportunities to see language in use with an Elmo. We already have a multimedia projector so an Elmo will greatly enhance the opportunity for my students to share their materials.

We have a sign in our room that says.

. . One light to save a polar bear. My students leave one light off to save resources for the polar bear. My students are that wonderful! One of them asked me how are we saving polar bears by making copies of stories about them? Did I see the contradiction! With an Elmo we won't need to make copies, and we can still share the stories. Everyday we are writing, and everyday we want to share. Won't you please help us help the polar bears while we learn?
