Oh My Gods!

We studied Ancient Greece when I was in 4th grade. We covered daily life, architecture, government and the roles of women. Yet, the only aspect I remember is mythology. I loved the Greek Gods. The wisdom of Athena as she changed forms from goddess to owl, protecting and guiding those that she trusted. Odysseus' journey home. The battle over Troy. Medusa turning people into stone. All of these gods, heroes and myths simply captivated my imagination. I loved learning about mythology and would like my 7th grade to experience the same. The only problem is, I do not have the resources to make this engaging. Although my curriculum requires that students compare and contrast gods, myths and legends, the text book does no more than merely mention a few names in its coverage of Greece and Egypt. Last year, in hopes of introducing my students to this subject we read a modified version of Homer's "Odyssey". Although many enjoyed it, especially when we read it as a class, often the book was too challenging when the students had to read it independently. So, I purchased some graphic novels to supplement the book. This was a huge success. Lower level readers were able to stay caught up in the reading, English language learners were more aware of what was going on. Students who were able to read the "Adventures of Ulysses" independently, were able to expand on their interest and explore other myths if they finished earlier. The few graphic novels I had were a huge help. This is why I am asking for a wide variety of these graphic novels about myths from around the world. I want my students to delve into the stories that people have been repeating for millenniums. This set of myths and legends will allow my students to cover those memorable tales from Ali Baba to Zeus. Classics will be brought to life through both the stories and illustrations. Beowulf, King Arthur, Robin Hood, Sundiata, William Tell and Hercules will all be introduced to a new generation. Legends from Japan, Mexico, Mali, Greece, England, China, the Arabian Peninsula and so much more will be brought to life and analyzed. Please help my students experience the fun of mythology and legends. Allow my lower level readers to feel successful as they dig deep into a classic. Help english language learners acquire new vocabulary through these wonderful texts and the graphic dictionaries. Really push my advanced students who are interested in reading everything they can get their hands on. If you help fund this project, you will be creating memories that will last a lifetime.
