Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids in their preteen years need nutrition and exercise guidance in these times of video games and fast food. The prospect of exercising and playing games with equipment they wouldn't otherwise have access to excites my students!

My students are a wonderful group of 5th graders, predominately Latino English Learners.

We are a small Title I school located in an economically depressed neighborhood. Most of my students live in apartments, with little chance to play outside. They are still at an age where healthy habits can be taught while having fun, but my PE equipment is extremely limited.

My Project

Physical education is an integral part of the education program for all students. It teaches them how their bodies move and how to perform a variety of physical activities. The equipment I am hoping for will provide a variety of different skills and movement patterns, which fit right into the 5th grade standards for PE: jumping rope (jump ropes), throwing a flying disc at a target and to a partner (Frisbees), kicking and stopping a ball with the feet while moving (soccer balls), and "sustaining continuous movement for an increasing period of time" (hula hoops).

Please help my students to be enthusiastically motivated to work towards achieving personal health goals and body image, so important at this age.
