My Students

This project is being written on behalf of a team 8 staff members including 7 teachers and 1 librarian. We teach at a small Title I school that is one of the most diverse in the nation. Our students are all 12th graders working on a capstone project that combines their Civics and English classes. Our students are inner city youth who come from a small town, just south of Seattle. They are native to the area, immigrants and refugees, and migrants from other places in our state and nation.

Our students are intelligent and curious young people who are passionate about their community, identifying the problems they face in their everyday lives, and finding and advocating for real solutions to these problems.

Our students come from an area where there is one high school in the school district. Resources for our students vary depending on their families. Poverty is a real issue in our community. Despite this, our students are eager to learn and grow everyday. We believe deeply that our students are deserving of the very best.

My Project

All 12th graders in Civics and English classes (180 students) at our school are creating a film as part of their capstone projects for our classes. This is a 2.5 month interdisciplinary culminating unit that begins in spring and lasts up until graduation.

Students will identify a community problem, conduct research on causes and symptoms, and create a call to action.

The medium is a short film. Students will vote on the best films that will then be played at a June film festival to high stakes audience that includes city council members, families, community members, district administrators, and project collaborators.

This is the third year we have run this project. The last two years have been a great success and we see huge potential for growth. Last year we did this project with 5 tripods for all 180 students. We are hoping to give our students better access to top notch equipment for them to produce quality films for our community.
