All 12th graders in Civics and English classes (180 students) at our school are creating a film as part of their capstone projects for our classes. This is a 2.5 month interdisciplinary culminating unit that begins in spring and lasts up until graduation. Students will identify a community problem, conduct research on causes and symptoms, and create a call to action. The medium is a short film. Students will vote on the best films that will then be played at a June film festival to high stakes audience that includes city council members, families, community members, district administrators, and project collaborators. This is the third year we have run this project. The last two years have been a great success and we see huge potential for growth. Last year we did this project with 5 tripods for all 180 students. We are hoping to give our students better access to top notch equipment for them to produce quality films for our community.
