My Students

Our jazz band members do an excellent job each day of reacting to my comments concerning their performance and sound. However, due to our lack of recording equipment, the students have never actually heard themselves playing.

Our school is located near a major city in South Carolina.

Like many areas of the country, our community has grown tremendously in the last decade, moving from basically a rural community to one containing numerous subdivisions. There is a strong sense of personal responsibility in our area. In addition, our population has a very strong work ethic. The values of the community are very much reflected in our high school. The students are polite, respectful, and very goal oriented. The high quality of the students here is one of the reasons I have taught at this school for the past 31 years!

My Project

It is one thing for a band director to tell students how to correct their performances. However, being able to hear the actual performance and relate that sound to the director's comments will greatly enhance the performance ability of our students. Due to recent advances in technology, contemporary students expect immediate feedback in their lives. The capability to record our band on a regular basis will allow us to provide that feedback for our students. My students need a multi track recorder to record and analyze their jazz performances.

The ability to record our rehearsals and performances will make our students both better musicians and better listeners.

Through the improvement of listening skills, overall musicianship will be improved and our students will also become more discerning consumers of music.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
