Once the materials arrived in August, the Wren School Garden club got straight to work filling the garden beds and planting various pumpkin seeds. Students and teachers diligently used our new hose to water the pumpkins as we cared for them each day. Our pumpkin harvest and subsequent sales to the faculty & staff resulted in a net profit of $100 for our garden! \r\n\r\nOnce the beds were cleared of pumpkin vines, Environmental science students and garden club members then turned then turned their attention to starting collards indoors for us transplant. During the first weekend of October, garden club members worked to line the perimeter of the beds with black cloth and set up the hose reel. Students then transplated the collard plants into their new home! Students are caring for the collards daily, using the gloves and tools provided to weed the beds. It has been such a privilege to see the growth of our students as they get their hands dirty and learn valuable skills along the way!","fullyFundedDate":1753292384575,"projectUrl":"project/raising-cane-and-vegetables-the-school/9432635/","projectTitle":"Raising Cane and Vegetables: The School Garden","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Boatwright","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10063658"},{"teacherId":5991345,"projectId":9374214,"letterContent":"Thank you so very much for donating to this very special project. I was not sure if it would be very successful because it was a very expensive one. The whole project (plant stand with built in lights, a thermometer, 8 plants, pots, stones for decorative purposes, potting soil and so much more! The students, particularly one, were excited every day for 5 days straight as each box was delivered to my class.\r\nBefore the plants and supplies entered my classroom, I had students research the benefits of taking care of plants. They couldn't believe what they found out, especially where they make people live longer. They found out by research it is good for air quality, can boost our moods, and calm the environment that we spend so much time in. As for me, I was amazed as well. You see, I do not know very much about plants or taking care of them. Now, I get excited when I see a plant grow an inch. I thought that all plants had to have roots to repot. We have repotted plants by their clippings.\r\nAnother student's mother donated over 50 different times of succulents. There are so many kinds! It has been excited in more ways than one. Some students have no interest, but they will come around. I cannot believe how much I know in such a very short time! The introduction of new digital scales and additional hot plates has enhanced their weighing abilities and allowed for more efficient group work. With individual access to equipment at their lab stations, students no longer need to wait to weigh materials. Furthermore, having multiple functional scales ensures accurate measurements and calibration. Witnessing the joy on their faces as they used the hot plates to create winter candy canes was truly priceless. We have utilized the digital scales on numerous occasions since then.
