Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Were you lucky enough to take family vacations as a child? Many of my students are Chicago residents who have never even seen Lake Michigan! Books are a means for children, especially children in low-income areas, to learn about the world around them and to experience the JOY of learning.

My students are second-graders in a dual language program.

The majority are low-income, and primarily speak Spanish at home. They are all bright, and incredibly excited to learn! Second graders at my school embark on a year-long country study to help them gain knowledge and an appreciation for the various cultures of the world. As we strive to help our students become biliterate and bilingual, it is important that we do not neglect the bicultural piece that will help them to truly thrive as the global citizens of tomorrow!

My Project

I am requesting books about France, classic French children's literature, and books that take place in France. The books are written at various reading levels to meet the needs of all students. I chose books written in Spanish wherever possible. For anyone who has ever searched, you know that finding children's books written in Spanish is much more expensive and time-consuming that finding books in English. Receiving these books from Donorschoose would help my students gain access to texts that might not otherwise be available to them. My objective in selecting all of these books was not only to teach students about France and to expose them to different aspects of French culture, but also to excite them and inspire them to continue learning about the great, big world around them!

I recently showed my students a youtube video in which a tourist took a walking tour of Paris.

They were literally SCREAMING with excitement when they saw the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs Élysées, and various other Paris landmarks. I can only imagine their excitement if they were to receive a box of shiny new books about France! Thank you for your consideration of my project!
