Notetaking With LiveScribe!

My students need a digital pen to help struggling notetakers learn from classmates who maintain model science notebooks.

My Students

Were you a terrible notetaker? What if you were absent, and you missed what was said in class? Wasn't that taxing and confusing, trying to copy notes the next day AND write the new day's notes?! Don't you wish you could see that one kid's notes that were always so neat and organized??

My 8th grade science students are diverse in socioeconomic status, home culture, home country, and their learning styles.

We are in a building of 7th and 8th grade with 1150 students, 76% of whom are on free or reduced lunch plans. I have six classes of approximately 30 students each. While each class receives the same content, the nuances and subtleties of what one class learns versus another makes it difficult when classmates try to get caught up from a friend who's in a different science class period. We have many move-outs/ins throughout the year and we are the lowest ranked school in our district in terms of attendance.

My Project

My students maintain a science notebook daily for the entire 8th grade year. Each student is expected and encouraged to write down notes, labs, movie clip reactions, graphs, drawings, and more to help him/her study for the assessments and to have a record of the 8th grade science year. My students struggle greatly with writing notes. The LiveScribe digital pen and notebooks capture audio from the teacher's lecture or class discussion, but also transfer the student's written notes into a saved and printable document. This flexibility will allow my absent students or struggling notetakers to see a model notebook and to literally be on the same page as their classmates. Students will rotate being the class scribe - the person in charge of the day's notes - empowering the student to lead and "be in charge" of the notes for the day. Eight notebooks are needed as the LiveScribe can maintain 8 different notebooks simultaneously for each of my science classes.

Students learn with digital technology, yet are expected to take notes, respond to and record information, and glean new knowledge from them.

When you're a struggling reader and notetaker, this is disadvantageous and makes school that much more frustrating. Practicing note taking and collaborating with the LiveScribe pen are lifelong skills for the 21st century learner.
