Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come mostly from low income homes. And though our school is located across the street from a junior college, most have never considered higher education as a possibility for their lives. My students are eager and capable of pursuing college and beyond. Our campus is one of the oldest campuses in our district. The buildings and the art deco speak of a long history and established respect in the community.
As a district, our desire is to see our students invested in their school.
As a result, we have started an enrichment block at the end of the day. This is an opportunity for teachers to develop an enrichment club that goes beyond their academic expertise. Clubs like cross country, card making, college exploration, yearbook, and more have been the results. It is a time within the day for teacher and student a like to learn more about their hobbies and interest and connect as people. For me, it matches my classroom mission: to strive to become contributing citizens living purposeful lives in a global society.
My Project
During the course of the school day, my students are able to participate in an enrichment club that helps their connection to the school and their learning. I host a crochet club with the goal of teaching students how to use their whole brain to create projects with yarn. As the school year progresses and their skills progress, the students begin to give back to society in the form of crocheting beanies for babies in the neonative intensive care.
Crochet loops students into school and gives them something new and exciting to look forward to at the end of the day.
Crochet allows for equity for all, as it is a skill accessible to all students from all backgrounds. The materials within this projects are the tools necessary to complete various projects and construct the beanies for sick children. The yarn will be used daily as students build their skills and give back to the community.
