Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school in CA. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. About 1/2 are English language learners. Half of my students live in a single parent home. These children love school and are excited to come each day. They are happy kids who encourage and celebrate one another's victories. We walk to a nearby Assisted Living home once a month to visit with our elderly friends. The children are so loving, patient, and kind with the residents there (most have dementia), while making crafts, chatting together, reading together etc Some of the children have taken their parents to visit their special friends at the Assisted Living home on weekends and one little girl and her single mom took Christmas gifts to some of the residents there! My 1st grade students are learning how to serve others and give of themselves.
My students love math and the challenge of solving math word problems.
They need help developing the ability & confidence to solve math problems & they need the tools to test and confirm their reasoning. They are eager to tackle double digit numbers up to 100 and beyond!
My Project
This grant will allow the purchase of 22 ten-bar Rekenreks ( 100 beads on each) for each of my first graders to be used for strategic reasoning in math. The Rekenrek is a wonderful tool, a visual model, for supporting the development of number sense, addition and subtraction strategies, place value, and subitizing.
Using the 100 bead Rekenreks, students will extend their counting to 100, add and subtract within 100, compose & decompose numbers into tens and ones, & explore multiplication as repeated addition.
The Rekenrek will help build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning and to help make abstract ideas concrete. The use of math tools offers the students an authentic learning experience which will help my students to bridge the gap between the world in which they live and the abstract world of mathematics.
