This grant will allow the purchase of 22 ten-bar Rekenreks ( 100 beads on each) for each of my first graders to be used for strategic reasoning in math. The Rekenrek is a wonderful tool, a visual model, for supporting the development of number sense, addition and subtraction strategies, place value, and subitizing. Using the 100 bead Rekenreks, students will extend their counting to 100, add and subtract within 100, compose & decompose numbers into tens and ones, & explore multiplication as repeated addition. The Rekenrek will help build students' confidence by giving them a way to test and confirm their reasoning and to help make abstract ideas concrete. The use of math tools offers the students an authentic learning experience which will help my students to bridge the gap between the world in which they live and the abstract world of mathematics.
