My Students

My school is located in a smaller urban city, Johnson City, NY, about an hour south of Syracuse. We are labeled a focus school district with many high-needs students both academically and social-emotionally. My school is 65% free and reduced lunch applicable.

My school has a very diverse group of students, who with caring adults and quality materials, can reach their full potential!

We do much learning in 5th grade across all subject areas that require rich texts in our classroom libraries. I hope my students can benefit from this donation! We are recently beginning to teach the Lucy Calkins Reader's Workshop model, and I am in need of many rich fiction and non-fiction texts at various levels.

My Project

With implementing Lucy Calkins Reader's Workshop for the first time, students are exposed to more genres than ever before! Students have choices in their independent reading books. However, my classroom library doesn't have as many non-fiction books that will meet the needs of 21st century learners.

My students need high quality non-fiction books about interesting topics, such as animals, science, and leaders in our community.

Students need colorful non-fiction books with amazing text features and images to help them grow as readers.

Students will be completing research projects where they will become experts on a topic, and these books will help spark their love of reading, researching, and writing!
