Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school's mission is to be "college ready, college bound". I have an eager, curious, and a rambunctious group of transitional and older kindergarten students. About 20% have not attended pre-school as it is not universally accessible in our community. Some come from daycare. Others come from Headstart and similar programs in the neighborhood. Almost all of them are English Language Learners. Many are coming in with a million word gap, underdeveloped fine and gross motor skills, and based on our beginning of the year assessments in August, only 20% are able to identify all the letters and their sounds. It is truly amazing to see their transformation in 10 school months.
Our school uses a balanced literacy approach....that means no scripted curriculum.
This is wonderful as I get to tailor instruction based on my students' needs. This can also be tricky as I need a variety of books and materials that are at their level. For some, this means they are ready to read. For others that means they need picture books with no words....known as wordless books.
My Project
I am requesting a yearlong subscription to Scholastic Let's Find Out magazine for 72 kindergarten students. Nonfiction sources like Let's Find Out allow our students to understand the elements of nonfiction: table of contents, headings, keywords, labels, maps, and charts. These elements are not in fiction books.
These magazine subscriptions will allow our students to have their own copies of a nonfiction writing piece.
It is my goal that they will use the magazines they receive as mentor texts and examples of what good nonfiction writing looks like when it comes time for them to explore nonfiction writing in Writers Workshop. I will also be using the teacher's editions that come with the subscription as a guide for parents who may not have had exposure to nonfiction writing.
