The county in which I teach is a diverse, multi-ethnic urban county and it is one of the fastest-growing population metropolitan areas in the state.
My students come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds including different countries, ethnicities, and social-economic backgrounds.
I work in a Title I school, which means that the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I taught 8th grade at the school that I am working at for 13 years. Then I left to work in the District Offices. With the teacher shortage this year, I came back to the school to teach, but I am now teaching 7th grade.
One thing that I've noticed when teaching the two different grades is that the students in 7th grade don't seem to know about personal hygiene yet.
For example, they are coming to my classroom after Physical Education classes, and I can tell that they haven't used deodorant.
Please understand that I absolutely love my students and am in no way trying to shame them. That is why I want to make up care packages for everyone and put personal hygiene products in there so that I can teach them all as a group when we talk about Immunity, Disease, and the Human Body. Because I am a science teacher, I came to the realization that even though this is not in my curriculum, it's something that the students absolutely need to learn about, and I'm probably the one who should be doing it, since electives such as Health class have been cut out of our Core Curriculum.
