News We CAN Use!

Help me give my students access to high-quality informational text as they learn important background knowledge and feel more connected to our world!

My Project

My students are so curious about the world around them and want to know how they can make a difference! As part of our reading and writing standards, we focus heavily on improving our comprehension of informational text and writing to persuade and inform others about a particular topic, marrying our opinions with factual evidence.

Scholastic News magazine provides my students the opportunity to read up-to-date information about national and world events, highlights historical figures who paved the way to make our world a better place, introduces them to students their own age who find ways to make a difference, and inform them on important moments in time from topics ranging to elections, the Olympics, global warming, safe use of technology, etc.

This publication produces both a weekly print edition along with high-quality digital resources that students may safely access to dive deeper into particular articles or learn more about a featured individual. We utilize this resource for whole group discussions, small group instruction, peer editing and revision, and thinking deeply about what we read and how we can connect it to personal interests as well as prior learning. I have utilized this resource for the last 11 years, and it has really improved my reading and writing instruction as well as captured the interest of my students! They look forward to seeing the next issue and saving the year's issues as a bit of a time capsule of our time together.
