Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Short notice I know, but ever hopeful. I've been lucky enough to have taken my students on wonderful trips this year through the generosity of donors on Donors Choose. I have one more trip that we would love to do! My fifth graders have been learning about the coral reef and endangered species. We're working in conjunction with our Special Education class (with their 5th and 6th graders)to make a special learning partnership. I would like to culminate all of their hard work with a trip to the aquarium in Brooklyn. We're located in East Harlem and believe it or not, the majority of my students have never been to Brooklyn and especially the aquarium! I'm as surprised as anyone to find out about that. I'd love to have the chance to take them there, but the cost is $5.25 per child. I have 29 students (and 3 chaperones) and the total comes to $168.00 That's not a lot of money, but since most of my kids get free breakfast and lunch, the cost is prohibitive. I hoping to have the opportunity to take them there on June 13th (but if funding doesn't happen in time), I could carry it over for my new students next year. I'd like to try to make this an annual trip. The Special Ed teacher and I would like to continue this project as well. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed that there's great weather that day!
