Our school is a middle-income school even though historically, our community has been primarily blue-collar. These kids are awesome. They are kind and respectful to each other and by-and-large, they work hard and care about their education. Many of the students will go on and get more schooling/training in their chosen fields.
However, some come from homes where reading isn't a priority or deemed engaging.
A lot of parents in our community encourage their children to go into manual labor or hourly wage jobs for a career and thus, don't deem reading and writing as necessary skills for their kids. I want them to have a great experience with literature so that they can overcome this paradigm. They need great literature to get them into reading.
Most of these students want to become voracious readers. They just don't know where to go to get the best books. Many of them read frequently and across the genres. They enjoy reading and are constantly looking for the newest and best stories. They need great literature; engaging literature. If I can get great books into their hands, they'll read them. You can help.
My Project
Three years ago, I started teaching science fiction and fantasy literature at our high school. It's been an amazing success. The amount of students enrolling has doubled and the kind of student taking the class has improved. This class used to be used for remediation for senior English. It's become a place of engagement, interest, fun and rigor, mainly because of the books you've donated.
We've exhausted the books you've so graciously donated and now, need new novels for the coming years.
There have been some amazing stories that have come out in the last year or two. We need those books in our class to continue to grow as a reading community. We need those books to enhance our experience. My students will have some great experiences next year. We've already paid to go to Comic Con and JK Rowling's The Crimes of Grindewold. We just need these books to complete the trifecta.
