First, thank you for taking the time to read about my students! I am a teacher in Oklahoma City, located on the north side of the city. Most of my students are African American, with families who live and work in the immediate area in low income occupations.
100% of my students are on the free lunch program, and many suffer from food and shelter insecurity.
Many walk over a mile to school every day, and have not only active academic and extracurricular lives, but even work to help support their families!
These are wonderful, intelligent, charismatic kids who, for a variety of reasons, need extra support and love. Basic classroom supplies are mostly provided by grants and foundations, but we are always in need. It takes more than just our local community to grow our classrooms!
I am moving from a middle school on the south side of Oklahoma City to a high school on the north side. This new school will have an entirely new school climate, many new teachers, and brand new administration. Oklahoma City Public Schools have just gone through a massive reorganization and this will be a new environment for everyone.
It is imperative my classes start off with the right materials!
Last year, I was a traveling teacher, sharing 5 classrooms. This year, I will be in my own room, but will be teaching US History, Advanced Placement US History, and US Government. My students will not be able to succeed without the proper tools.
These few materials are essential to my students succeeding. In our fast-paced world, headphones are a must for viewing multimedia content, and having a set for each child will make learning equal and equitable. Storage bins will house student work, and good pencil sharpeners make sure time is not wasted trying to get tasks done!
