This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
New Orleans' students face incredible environmental and educational challenges including hurricanes, oil spills, and sub-standard educational environments. It is my experience that concrete success in art often provides a child with low self esteem the motivation to rise above!
My art students are sincere, genuine and incredibly talented in spite of their challenging life-situations.
They attend a predominantly African American urban high school that is progressive and welcoming to all. The spirit of our school is strong and united, and one that often keeps students bonded to their school so much so that they spend many hours in extracurricular activities also.
My Project
My students need nothing more than a few materials, and because they are numerous (150!), they also require somewhere to organize their projects. My students beg to paint, and so need more paint and brushes. Since there may be 150 or more paintings being completed at a time they need an essential dry rack to organize their works.
These necessary art supplies will directly impact the lives of a population of students often forgotten or pushed to the wayside.
Just because they come from a challenging environment there is no reason why they shouldn't have access to an opportunity to express their creative ideas. These ideas once brought to fruition (or visible success) provide those with a history of failures who often leave school prematurely an immeasurable boost to their self esteem.
