My Students

Our school is located in a suburban environment and supports the learners that have a difficult time being successful in their home schools. The majority of the students in the Freshman Academy are from low-income households. Many of the students have difficult arrangements and do not express their needs because they do not want to be embarrassed. Most of my students come from single-parent households which require them to assist their parents in various ways. In spite of the obstacles, my students are STARS! They come to school and perform their very BEST! As a teacher, I'm always flexible and accommodating to provide eccentric in-class opportunities to help them develop into life-long learners.

My Project

One area my students struggle with is being kind and compassionate. For the last 7 years my classroom has had three gecko lizards. When the students arrive at school, they look for the geckos to clean their cage, and feed them. They are excited daily to check-in and monitor the lizards overall wellness.

By caring for the geckos it has taught the students responsibility, compassion and gentleness.

The compassion and gentleness has carried over into the classroom. The students are learning how to be kind, gentle and respectful to each others and others outside the classroom.

The donations for this new habitat for lizards will help my students improve their social-emotional, behavioral and science skills. Please help me get my students the supplies they need for growing lizards!
