Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day I walk into my classroom full of inquisitive students who come to school each day eager to learn. They are pushed to succeed to their highest potential by engaging in diverse learning experiences through small group instructions, cooperative groups, and centers.

My class is made up of a diverse group of learners in an intercity school in which over half of the student population receives free and reduced lunch.

More than half of my students come from families where English is a second language. Although the language may be a hurdle to their everyday learning, my students are an inquisitive, ambitious, courageous, energetic, and hard working group of children. However, more than half of my students are below grade level in reading. With such a deficiency in reading, the majority of my students struggle in all academic areas. Since I have taught in the upper grades and this is my first year teaching first grade, I do not have all the materials I need to help my current students succeed. With a leveled classroom library and cart, a magnetic white board, magnetic sight words, sight word books, and sight word activities I can begin to create a rich learning environment to help promote and support language development, fluency, and comprehension.

My Project

In order for my students to go from non-readers to readers, they need to have constant contact with books. The more interactions they have with books on their individual reading level, the better readers they will become. This can only be accomplished through the use of their very own classroom library. The library will be a place they can go “shopping” for books on their independent reading level that interest them. Students will do independent reading, partner reading, and center work with these books. The set comes in sturdy bins to keep the books safe as well as stickers to mark the level of each book making picking a just right book super easy! The magnetic white board will be used during guided reading time when I pull small groups of kids to work on specific skills. The board will be used to model skills and strategies. All of the sight word materials will be used mostly during centers where students can read, build, and write sentences containing sight words.

A leveled classroom library, a magnetic white board, magnetic sight words, sight word books, and sight word activities will give my students an opportunity to practice independent reading on their level through access to high quality material.

Providing this rich literacy learning environment will help to promote and support language development, fluency, and comprehension that will last a lifetime!
