Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a low-income Title 1 school in the Katy Independent School District. I teach on-level as well as block students who need extra support to be successful in math. Students at my school sometimes are unable to get real-life experiences that others might get.
My 7th graders are hard-working, despite going through one of the most difficult experiences of their lives.
Many of my students were affected and displaced because of Hurricane Harvey. One would think that experiencing such trauma would lower their spirits, but they conquered through and come to school happy every day. My students are truly eager to learn, despite limited resources, and strive to do well in math.
My Project
Getting a 2:1 student to manipulative ratio would immensely help my low-income students fully understand how to calculate surface area. Right now, there is only one set that I use the entire day. Students have a hard time grasping such an abstract idea, let alone not being able to touch it with their own hands!
They will get a hands-on experience with the Geometric shapes and nets.
These shapes have nets inside of them that my students will be able to open up and close themselves. Getting such an essential experience is necessary for all of my students to learn lateral and total surface area.
