My Students

If you were to take a snapshot of the students in my classroom, you would see children who are eager and excited to learn. Many come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures including students who have faced severe trauma in their lives.

My students and school are located in the middle of a major US city and this brings many different backgrounds together to create a unique learning environment.

Even with the struggles they face at home, I try to make my students look forward to coming to school by creating a safe and engaging place for them.

My Project

It takes many components for a successful, effective classroom. Especially during these unprecedented times, having solid classroom foundations makes learning happen more effectively. One of those components is having a great selection of books that meets the needs and interest level of all students. Using the "Who Was..." series is an engaging way to get students to read non-fictions texts. Having a selection of novels and chapter books like "Esperanza Rising", "Holes", and "Island of the Blue Dolphins" allows me to lead small reading groups with engaging and great pieces of literature.

Another important component of a successful classroom is having great management tools that motivate and reward positive behavior.

With materials like "Squishies" and "100 Piece Erasers", I can quickly and easily motivate students and give positive reinforcement with these little rewards that are plentiful and students enjoy collecting.

Finally, having a safe classroom environment is very important for a student's Social and Emotional Learning. I have chosen books about 9/11 that allow students to express their feelings and thoughts that can relate to the curriculum. I've had students that could benefit from taking brain breaks but haven't had the tools needed for this to be most effective. By having the "Sensory Kit", I can allow students to take a break to refocus and return to class ready to learn.
