My first grade is built upon The Responsive Classroom philosophy
and the belief that all things in the room are "ours" not "mine". With
that said, I feel that each child should have a place to call their own.
A place to keep their own leveled books, reading journals and writing folders.
First graders typically have a difficult time sharing.
We work very
hard to build a community of sharers. Many of the children come
from homes that they have little to share, let alone a special place
to keep favorite books or writing journals! Coming to school each
day is often the only time they are read to, have the opportunity to read to someone, write stories and share these stories with others! For those children more fortunate, my classroom has always been an environment that they also find a voice...learning to read and write, sharing their writing and growing into life long learners! Our school is an old building without many modern touches.
Storage is a huge problem and keeping things organized and within reach of "little people" can be challenging!
My Project
This literacy storage case will offer my students a place to call their own for their reading and writing materials. With that in mind, little hands will have easy access to these materials. Imagine a place that is neat, organized, and accessible! Each child will learn to have the responsibility of keeping their own leveled books
and writing materials in their own personal cubby! I can see the SMILES now. Can YOU?
I already have a space in my classroom picked out and measured for this beautiful literacy center.
I know this center will be well used for many years to come! Your generosity will give each little person a place to call their own, an opportunity to "share" a story or two with a friend and be neat and organized!
