My Space for Calm

My Students

I am currently a school therapist so most of my students have behavioral or mental health issues currently. I work with a diverse population with students from every social-economic background. They are wonderful kids and work to make changes in their lives. Many of my students have a difficult time coping with stress and life challenges. They come into my office and learn coping strategies through a variety of tools and many of those tools are hands-on experiences.

It is wonderful to see them find something that works for them to help them focus and practice coping skills such as Mindfulness.

My Project

My project is to help students at our school have a safe place to cope with stress, emotional issues and mental health concern. Students who I work with deal with depression, anxiety and other emotional and behavioral concerns. My students will find a safe place in "My Space for Calm" where they can use the tools developed through this project to provide the best ways to cope. Most of my students have experienced some sort of trauma in their lives and this project will further develop their ability to develop relaxation techniques and practice cognitive coping.

I use games to explore their understanding of emotions and social situations.

I also use fidgets and manipulatives to distract students who feel anxious and use them as a way to be able to feel comfortable with opening up about things. We also will use other tools to practice mindfulness to further bring calm to their lives.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
