This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are fortunate enough to have a school that represents many parts of the world. My students are from Vietnam, Honduras, Ecuador, Guatemala, Ghana, Iraq, Togo, China, Somalia, Ethiopia, Oromia, El Salvador, Djibouti, Haiti, Kenya and Mexico. They face many challenges as they begin to prepare for their future in their new country.

Not only are they attending high school to learn content to become successful adults but they are doing it in a new language which they are learning simultaneously.

The majority of our students have none or very limited formal education. They are excited learners who deserve the necessary resources to help them learn English. They are working very hard to have the same opportunities as all other students.

My Project

All of our students are newly arrived immigrant and refugees. The vast majority have never experienced a cold snowy winter. Minnesota winters are definitely cold and snowy and are often downright dangerous if you do not have the proper winter gear. Many students don't understand the severity of the effects of waiting at the bus stop or walking outside for a long time. They show up to school without hats and gloves. In some cases, they don't show up to school because they don't have these items and don't want to go outside. Our school budget is so tight that teachers have been spending a lot of their own money on these items for students over the past few years. This project will keep our students safe and help them get to school prepared.
