Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember seeing something so moving and then not having the words to accurately describe it? My students see amazing things every day, but struggle to find the words to convey the excitement or sadness they feel. What if there was a way for everyone to see the images that move them so much?
My students are largely from an ELL background.
They lack the means to obtain technology in their personal lives, and for the most part become introverted because they do not have a means to express themselves. Due to budget cuts our school does not have the funds for basic art supplies, much less photography projects. Finances have resulted in the stifling of my students artistic creativity, and their language barriers have stunted their academic and personal growth. These students have a wealth of potential inside of them, just looking for a way to get it out. Using cameras and pictures can bridge the cultural and language gaps while developing the trust and connection that is needed between teachers and students.
My Project
All people regardless of age have a personal story to tell. My students are no different, except that they are still learning the words to accurately tell that story. Imagine if you can help facilitate this growth by contributing to this project? These students will not only learn academic skills, but that they are valued as people and their loved both inside and outside of the classroom are worth something.
My students need digital cameras, a printer, storage, and paper in order to record the beauty and struggles of their lives.
This project may create the next Ansel Adams or Peter Lik. It may be the key for the quiet students to engage the class and come out of their shell. This might be the moment when all the academic language clicks in the mind of a second language learner, and they embark on a trek to be a life long learner. Without these materials my creativity as a teacher is stunted, and it is the students who will ultimately suffer.
