Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My guess is at least 50% of you remember what it was like to be a middle school girl- the drama, the friendships that were constantly up and down, fights with your parents, and giggling about boys. And hopefully, you also remember that teacher that got you hooked on books.
I teach at a middle school in New York City.
Ninety-seven percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch. It is a Title 1 school comprised of mostly ELLs (English Language Learners), which means that many of them do not have parents at home that can provide them support with their English language books. My students are in a special education class, and they struggle with reading comprehension. This means that it is even more crucial that they practice reading as much as possible.
My Project
I know that the number one way to become a better reader is to read more books. I also know the number one way to hook a kid on reading is to hook them on a book that is part of a series or that has a similar style book readily available. So when I found out recently that one of my students has read "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret" 5 times already, I knew I had an opportunity I did not want to miss. Like this student, my other girls are looking for books they can relate to, books that discuss "girl issues" (their words, not mine) and have characters their age. These Judy Blume books meet the requirements of my students as well as mine- books they can relate to and find interesting, books that I can hook them on so they can't help but keep reading more!
I am requesting 4 copies of each book so that my students can read the same books at the same time.
This will have the added benefit that they will be able to discuss the books with one another. This will help them develop their reading comprehension as well as help them process some of the many social issues they are struggling with in middle school. And again, for 50% of you or so, I know you know girls' social issues in middle school require some help to maneuver!
